Choosing a kitchen hood for a Lebanese kitchen

A kitchen hood is judged in the first ten minutes of frying: does the smell stay in the kitchen, and can you still hear each other. Five questions decide it.

1. Start with where it hangs

   An island hood hangs from the ceiling over an island cooktop. A wall hood is fixed to the wall above a cooktop that stands against it. A built-in hood disappears into an upper cabinet, and a ceiling hood sits flush in a lowered ceiling.

2. Cover the whole cooktop

   Choose a hood at least as wide as the cooktop below it, and wider over an island, where nothing stops the steam from drifting sideways. Falmec hoods here run from 35 cm to 180 cm.

3. Ducted or recirculating

   Many apartments in Lebanon have no way to vent outside. A recirculating Falmec hood passes the air through a carbon filter and returns it to the room without the smell; on most models it is a Carbon.Zeo filter, regenerable rather than thrown away. Where a duct to the outside is possible, ducting remains the strongest option.

4. Read the decibels per speed

   Falmec publishes the noise of every speed. The Spazio 180 runs from 48 dB at speed one to 67 dB at full power, the Lumen 175 from 49 to 67 dB. Everyday cooking sits in the lower speeds; the top speed is for searing and frying.

5. Frying needs the right filter

   For a kitchen that fries and grills, the Pro models use professional baffle filters, the kind made for heavy cooking. The grease filters lift out and wash, and the motor draws 130 to 320 W at full speed, little enough for any generator line.
