Running appliances on a generator or solar in Lebanon: Miele power draw by model

Every household in Lebanon runs on a mix of state power, a generator subscription measured in amperes, and increasingly a solar and battery system. The question we hear most at the Miele showroom in Beirut is not "which model" but "will it run on my 10 amps". No retailer in Lebanon publishes the answer. This page does: connected load, amps and energy for every Miele appliance we sell, model by model, and the subscription each one needs. If a salesman cannot give you these numbers for the machine he is selling, he does not know what it draws.

Miele ovens built into a modern kitchen

The one formula you need

At 220 V, amps = watts divided by 220. A 2,200 W appliance draws 10 A. A 5 A subscription gives you about 1,100 W; 10 A about 2,200 W; 15 A about 3,300 W; 20 A about 4,400 W. Those are ceilings, not comfortable working loads: lighting, the fridge compressor and a water pump are usually already on the same line.

The 2.1 to 2.4 kW figure on a washing machine is the heater plus the motor at full load. The heater only runs when the programme heats water. On a cold or 20 degree programme the heater stays off and the machine runs on the ProfiEco inverter motor alone, which is why a cold wash fits a 5 A line. Indicative draw on a cold programme is a few hundred watts during wash and under 1 kW at the 1,400 rpm spin peak (indicative). Set 30 degrees or more and the heater adds up to 2 kW for the first minutes of the cycle: that needs 10 A or more.

Heat-pump dryers are the easy case. Miele's T1 dryers recycle heat instead of generating it, so the connected load is 1.1 kW, about 5 A. A vented or condenser dryer from another brand typically pulls 2.5 kW or more. If you dry on a generator line, the heat-pump dryer is the single biggest difference you can make.

Power cut mid-cycle: Miele W1 and T1 machines keep the programme in memory and resume where they stopped when power returns. No reset, no drained drum, no need to start again. Based on our service records in Lebanon, we do not recommend a UPS or inverter for laundry appliances at all: we have not seen electronics failures caused by generator switching on these machines. Anyone selling you a UPS for a Miele washing machine is selling you a UPS.

A dishwasher heats its own water, so the 2 kW heater is part of every cycle. Plan for 10 A. The good news is energy per cycle: 0.54 kWh in the Eco programme, and 6 to 9 litres of water against 40 litres or more by hand, which matters when water is trucked.

An electric oven is the one appliance that genuinely needs 15 A or more while it heats. Two practical answers for Lebanese kitchens: run the oven on state power or solar during the day and batch your baking, or choose a gas hob for daily cooking and keep the electric oven for when the line allows. Miele ovens hold temperature with well-insulated cavities, so once at temperature the heater cycles on and off rather than running continuously.

Cooling: fridges, freezers, fridge-freezers

Cooling is where we do recommend a UPS or a battery and inverter system, because a fridge must run through the cut, and this is where Miele's low consumption pays back daily. A Miele fridge-freezer needs about half the battery of a typical no-frost fridge-freezer sold in Lebanon at 350 to 450 kWh a year; that is a smaller inverter, fewer batteries and a cheaper solar system for as long as you own it.

Miele KFFD 6741 French door$4,653269 kWh0.74 kWh
Miele KFMC 3834 MasterCool$18,660254 kWh0.70 kWh

A Miele fridge-freezer at 185 kWh per year averages about 0.5 kWh a day, about 21 W continuous. Compressor start-up is brief and handled by any 1 kVA or larger inverter. For a 12 hour cut, a Miele fridge-freezer needs roughly 0.25 kWh of battery, which is why customers on small solar systems in Lebanon report their fridge running through the night without trouble. Miele cooling also tolerates voltage swings well; even without a UPS we see very few electricity-related faults.

Sizing in one paragraph

Laundry: a Miele washer plus heat-pump dryer runs on a 10 A line with warm washes, or on 5 A with cold washes and the dryer run separately. Kitchen: dishwasher on 10 A, oven on 15 A, both happier on state or solar hours. Cooling: a 1 to 1.5 kVA inverter with battery covers a Miele fridge-freezer through a long cut. Our showroom team in Saifi, Beirut will go through your subscription amps and solar inverter rating before you choose; bring the inverter model number.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Miele washing machine run on a 5 amp generator subscription in Lebanon?

Yes on a cold or 20 degree programme, when the heater is off and only the inverter motor runs. Programmes at 30 degrees or more switch the heater on and need a 10 amp line.

What happens to a Miele washer or dryer when the power cuts mid-cycle?

The programme is held in memory and resumes where it stopped when power returns. We do not recommend a UPS for laundry appliances in Lebanon.

Does a Miele heat-pump dryer work on a generator?

Yes. Connected load is 1.1 kW, about 5 amps, less than half of a conventional dryer.

Which Miele appliances need 15 amps?

Electric ovens and steam ovens (3.3 to 3.7 kW) while heating. Dishwashers need 10 amps; cooling and heat-pump dryers run on 5 amps.

Do I need a UPS for a Miele fridge in Lebanon?

For cooling we recommend a battery and inverter or UPS of 1 kVA or more so the fridge runs through the cut. A Miele fridge-freezer uses about 0.5 kWh a day, so a small battery covers a long outage.

How fast is Miele service in Lebanon?

Six technicians, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. Parts are in stock in Beirut about 90 percent of the time, otherwise 3 to 4 days by DHL. Full repair is usually done in 1 to 2 days.
