Dishwashers in Lebanon: how to choose (2026 guide)
Lebanon is one of the last markets where people still argue about whether a dishwasher is worth it. The argument is over. A Miele dishwasher washes 14 place settings with 8.2 litres of water; doing the same by hand takes 40 to 60 litres. When water comes by truck and is paid by the cubic metre, a dishwasher pays for its own water bill in the first year. The real questions are the ones nobody answers in the shop: built-in or freestanding, how many place settings, what it draws on your generator line, and which price tier is actually cheaper over ten years. This is the answer from the Miele showroom in Saifi, Beirut, where we have sold and serviced dishwashers since 1981.
1. Built-in or freestanding
Freestanding: finished sides and top, stands anywhere with a water point and a drain, moves with you. Right for a rental, a kitchen you will not rebuild, or a laundry corner. Semi-integrated: slides under the counter, your kitchen door panel on the front, control panel visible on top. Fully integrated: disappears completely behind a cabinet door; Miele's Knock2open means no handle at all, you knock twice and the door opens. If you are building or renovating a kitchen, decide this before the cabinet maker cuts: a fully integrated model needs a 60 cm niche, a plinth cut-out and a door panel ordered with the kitchen.
2. Place settings: 14 is the standard, XXL is for Lebanese families
A "place setting" is one person's dinner: plate, side plate, bowl, glass, cup, cutlery. 13 to 14 place settings is the normal 60 cm machine and covers a family of four with a day's dishes. Miele XXL models add 5 cm of height, which is the difference between the big serving dishes going in the machine or staying in the sink after a Sunday lunch. In Lebanon, where cooking for twelve is Tuesday, the XXL is not a luxury.
3. Power: what a dishwasher needs from your line
A dishwasher heats its own water, so unlike a washing machine there is no cold-wash trick. Miele dishwashers are 2 kW connected load, about 9 A at 220 V. They run on a 10 A subscription with little else on the line, and on any solar inverter of 2 kVA or more. On 5 A they do not run; nothing with a heater does. The useful numbers are the other ones: 0.54 kWh per Eco cycle, so a load costs less electricity than a kettle boiled three times, and the programme resumes after a power cut without draining or restarting. 4. What separates a good dishwasher from a cheap one
Water per cycle: Miele 8.2 to 8.4 litres with automatic load sensing; entry machines 11 to 14 litres with none. Noise: 41 to 45 dB on a Miele, which is quieter than a normal conversation and matters in an open kitchen; entry machines are 48 to 52 dB, which is a running tap. Drying: Miele AutoOpen cracks the door at the end of the cycle so plastics come out dry; cheap machines leave you towelling Tupperware. Dosing: AutoDos with PowerDisk measures powder automatically for a month of cycles; nobody else has it. Racks: the 3D MultiFlex cutlery tray and FlexCare glass holders are why Miele owners stop hand-washing wine glasses. Build: stainless steel cavity on every Miele; plastic cavities on most machines under $600 stain, hold odours and crack. Lifetime: Miele dishwashers are tested to 20 years of use. The cheap machine is designed to be replaced in 6 to 8 years.

Over 18 years: a $400 machine replaced twice is $1,200 plus three installations, three sets of hoses and three weeks of hand-washing in between, and it used 40 percent more water on every cycle. 6. Miele vs Bosch dishwashers, plainly
Bosch Serie 6 is a good dishwasher at $900 to $1,200 and is the right answer for someone who wants German reliability at the lowest price. Where Miele pulls away: AutoDos automatic dosing (Bosch has none), 20-year test standard against 10 to 13 years, 41 dB on the G 7000 against 42 to 44 dB, and a single service organisation in Lebanon. That last point is the one comparison sites get backwards. In Lebanon a Miele is repaired by one of six Miele-trained technicians, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the genuine part in stock in Beirut about 90 percent of the time and otherwise 3 to 4 days from Miele by DHL. Full repair in 1 to 2 days. Warranty 2 years, extendable to 7, from the company that sold it. A Bosch is repaired by whoever answers the phone.

8. Before you buy
Measure the niche: 60 cm wide, 81 to 87 cm high for a standard machine, 84.5 to 91 cm for XXL. Check that the water inlet and drain are within 1.5 m. Note your generator amps and inverter kVA.
